3 types of fitness
Your body’s overall fitness is made up of three parameters, and your fitness program should ideally reflect this (and involve all major muscle groups) to help you achieve full fitness:
1. Aerobic or Cardiovascular Fitness: Aerobic fitness is your body’s ability to pump oxygen-rich blood through your blood vessels, especially when you engage in activities that increase your heart rate over a long period of time. If you’re able to do cardio like running, swimming, or biking for long periods of time, you have a high level of aerobic fitness.
2. Muscle Building or Anaerobic Fitness: Anaerobic fitness is the amount of work your muscles can handle (and for how long) without needing a rest, and is reflected in your overall muscle mass. Strength training increases anaerobic fitness, so the ability to bench press or squat above your body weight multiple times in a row can indicate your level of anaerobic fitness.
3. Flexibility: Your muscles become shorter after physical activity and exertion; Flexibility measures how stretched your muscles are. You can improve your flexibility with regular stretching and flexibility exercises like yoga.
